| Obverse description | Left-facing armored bust of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish conquistador and explorer, depicted wearing an ornately decorated morion helmet adorned with elaborate engraved scrollwork and a gorget with chain mail detail visible at the neck. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detailing on the armor. The circular legend REPÚBLICA DE PANAMÁ arcs around the periphery, interrupted by the bust, with the date 1940 inscribed in the lower exergual area. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded rim. |
