Additional information

Poland issued this coin during the most politically volatile stretch of martial law, declared by General Jaruzelski in December 1981 to suppress Solidarity. Commemorating John Paul II's 1979 visit — the first papal visit to a communist country — while the state simultaneously imprisoned Solidarity activists required a certain ideological contortion the authorities never publicly acknowledged. The coin circulated as a hard-currency collectible rather than pocket change, priced well beyond ordinary wages.
