| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a right-facing bust portrait of Pope John Paul II (Jan Paweł II), shown from the shoulders upward and wearing papal vestments, set against a finely engine-turned guilloche background of crosshatched lines that contrasts with a plain matte-black vertical band to the left. The portrait is rendered with a bold outline emphasizing the silhouette of the Holy Father. The vertical inscription 'JAN PAWEŁ II' appears in the left field within the dark band, reading upward along the portrait's edge. |

| Additional information |
Issued in 1989, this piece belongs to a series the Mint of Poland produced under considerable political tension — the Communist government was still nominally in power, yet John Paul II's influence on the Solidarity movement had made overt papal commemoration a quietly charged act. The regime fell before the year was out.
The 2000 Złoty denomination was a relic of pre-reform Polish currency, rendered obsolete the following year when the złoty was redenominated at 10,000:1.
