The Longmen Grottoes near Luoyang, Henan province, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in November 2000 — the direct occasion for this commemorative issue. Carved predominantly during the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties between the 5th and 8th centuries, the site comprises over 2,300 caves and niches. The 2,000 yuan face value places this among the higher-denomination gold commemoratives China issued in the early 2000s, a series that targeted both domestic institutional buyers and the international collector market following China's aggressive expansion of its precious-metal program through the late 1990s.
