Reverse description The central field presents a detailed depiction of Zhang Heng's seismoscope (houfeng didong yi), the world's first known seismological instrument, shown as a large ornate bronze urn with decorative dragon motifs. Surrounding the instrument, several robed scholars and court figures are depicted in attendance, rendered in fine relief against a stylized landscape background. An inscription in the upper left field reads '地动仪' (seismoscope) along with '公元(AD)二世纪' indicating its origin in the 2nd century AD. The denomination '2000元' appears in the lower right portion of the field. The overall design celebrates China's ancient scientific achievements in a highly detailed, artistic composition.
