Reverse description Central field depicts a raised relief map showing the landmasses of mainland China and Taiwan positioned together, symbolising reunification, set against a radiating sunburst pattern emanating from behind the maps and filling the background field. A circular legend in Chinese characters runs along the entire periphery. The denomination '2000元', the fineness 'Au.999', and the weight '1kg' appear in the lower central field beneath the map motif. The design commemorates the 50th anniversary of Taiwan's retrocession to China following the end of World War II.

Additional information

This issue was part of China's ambitious commemorative gold program of the mid-1990s, timed to the 50th anniversary of Taiwan's retrocession from Japanese colonial rule following Japan's surrender in August 1945. The political framing is deliberate — the PRC uses "return" rather than "retrocession" to assert continuity of sovereignty that remains, of course, contested. Coins of this weight and fineness were struck in extremely limited quantities, intended almost entirely for institutional buyers and sovereign wealth collections rather than any retail market.
