| Obverse description | The obverse features the state emblem of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea centrally placed in the field, depicting a hydroelectric dam and power pylon set against a mountain landscape, surmounted by a five-pointed star radiating rays, and flanked by sheaves of rice bound with a ribbon bearing the country's name in Hangul script. The circular legend in Hangul reads the name of the issuing authority along the upper periphery, while the fineness '999' appears at lower left and '1 OZ' at lower right. The denomination '2000 WON' is inscribed in large Latin characters along the lower rim. |

| Additional information |
Issued in 1992 to mark the 80th anniversary of Kim Il Sung's birth, this coin was produced almost entirely for foreign hard-currency markets — the DPRK's collector coin program through the 1990s was explicitly designed to generate convertible currency from Western and Asian numismatic buyers, not for domestic circulation. North Korean citizens had no access to gold coinage of any kind.
KM#53 is one of several denominations struck for this anniversary, with the 2000 Won face value bearing no relationship to any functional exchange rate.
