| Reverse description | The reverse is struck in high relief and shaped in the form of Shakyamuni Buddha seated in the lotus position (padmasana) upon an ornately decorated lotus throne with beaded and petal borders. The figure is depicted in the bhumisparsha mudra, with the right hand touching the earth in witness gesture and the left hand resting in the lap in dhyana mudra. The Buddha is draped in monastic robes with naturalistically rendered folds, and the ushnisha (cranial protuberance) is clearly defined atop the head. The entire coin blank is shaped to conform to the contour of the seated figure, and the gold plating imparts a lustrous, devotional quality to the sculptural relief. |
