Matthäus retired from professional football in 2000 after a career spanning Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern Munich, Internazionale, and the New York MetroStars — the latter stint doing little for his legend. Uganda's commemorative series from this period licensed footballer portraits through a third-party coin producer, the same mechanism behind dozens of similar Pacific and African-jurisdiction issues flooding the collector market in the early 2000s. The Bank of Uganda had no particular connection to the subject matter; the denomination and issuer were essentially rented.
