Uganda's Bank issued a series of silver-plated copper-nickel pieces in the mid-2000s honoring international football figures — a category of modern novelty coinage produced almost exclusively for the collector market and never intended for circulation. Hakan Şükür's inclusion reflects his status at the time as Turkey's all-time leading scorer, a record he held for decades. He is perhaps better known internationally for scoring the fastest goal in World Cup history — 11 seconds into Turkey's third-place playoff against South Korea at the 2002 Japan/Korea tournament.
His later political career, and subsequent flight from Turkey following the 2016 coup attempt, added a biographical dimension no one anticipated when this piece was struck.
