Additional information

Somalia's elephant bullion series has run since 1999, making it one of the longer-running wildlife bullion programs on the market. The annual design changes have built a following among type collectors, though the issuing authority's relationship to actual monetary policy in Somalia is notional at best — the coins are produced under license and marketed almost entirely to Western bullion buyers.

The 1000g, 100mm format puts this squarely in kilo-coin territory, a category that expanded sharply after the Perth Mint's kilo koala demonstrated commercial viability for the format in the late 1980s.
