| Additional information |
The Bank of Mauritius was established in 1967, the same year the island gained independence from Britain, making its 55th anniversary inseparable from the broader postcolonial moment. Mauritius has leaned heavily on commemorative gold issues since the 1970s, partly as a deliberate foreign exchange and prestige strategy for a small open economy with no domestic gold production.
The .9166 fineness is the traditional 22-karat standard — the same used for sovereign-format coins across the Commonwealth — a choice almost certainly not accidental for an institution born out of British monetary administration.
