Qatar's National Day was not officially established as December 18th until 2007 — the same year this coin was struck — replacing the earlier "Accession Day" celebrations that had marked Sheikh Khalifa's 1972 coup. The shift was a deliberate rebranding under Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, tying the holiday to the date in 1878 when Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani consolidated rule over the peninsula.
