| Reverse description | The reverse displays the crowned Royal Arms of Portugal, comprising the traditional quartered shield with the five escutcheons of the Quinas in the center and the red bordure charged with castles, all set upon an ornate mantled coat of arms. The royal crown surmounts the shield at the top center, and decorative drapery or mantle flanks the composition on either side. The denomination 2000 REIS is inscribed in the lower portion of the field below the arms, with the legend arching around the upper periphery. The heraldic design is deeply struck and characteristic of Portuguese gold coinage of the mid-19th century. |
