The "without phrase" designation refers to the absence of the legend CONSTITUIÇÃO E INDUSTRIA that had appeared on earlier 2000 réis issues. The change was administrative rather than political — a quiet revision during a period when Brazil's monetary system was already under strain from the costs of the Paraguayan War, which had ended in 1870 but left imperial finances significantly depleted.
