| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a square shield bearing five escutcheons in cross formation, each charged with five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles — surmounted by a Portuguese royal crown with trefoil finials. The denomination 2000 appears to the left of the shield. The circular legend reads IOANNES V D G PORT ET ALG REX, separated by small quatrefoil stops, running along the inner border of the beaded rim. The design is executed in the baroque style typical of early eighteenth-century Portuguese colonial coinage. |
