Floriano Peixoto served as Brazil's second president from 1891 to 1894, a period marked by two armed revolts — the Federalist Revolution in the south and a naval rebellion in Rio de Janeiro harbor. His government survived both, earning him the nickname "Iron Marshal." By the time this coin was struck in 1939, Brazil was deep into Vargas's Estado Novo dictatorship, and the choice to keep Peixoto on circulating coinage carried an implicit political endorsement of strongman rule as historical precedent.
