| Obverse description | Central field depicts a three-masted Portuguese carrack under full sail navigating open seas, rendered in fine engraved detail, evoking the fleet of Pedro Álvares Cabral that reached Brazil in 1500. Seabirds are shown in flight in the lower field, and a cluster of stars appears in the upper left field above the vessel. The design is enclosed within a raised inner circle, with the circumferential legend REPUBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL arcing around the full periphery, separated by a single star at the base.
