Issued as part of Colombia's mid-century commemorative gold program, this piece honors Guillermo Valencia, the Popayán-born poet and politician who ran unsuccessfully against Marco Fidel Suárez in the 1918 presidential election. Valencia was one of the most decorated literary figures of his generation in Latin America — his loss to Suárez did nothing to diminish his cultural standing, and the Colombian state eventually placed him on gold.
The .900 fineness follows the same standard used across the Banco de la República's commemorative series of the early 1970s, most of which saw limited export through coin dealers rather than genuine domestic circulation.
