The 2000 Pesos Dominicanos denomination was introduced in 2014 as the highest value note in Dominican circulation, a direct response to inflation eroding the practical utility of the 1000 Pesos note that had served as the ceiling since 2004. The decision was contentious — critics pointed out that a high-denomination note of this size implicitly acknowledged how far the peso had slipped since the catastrophic 2003 banking crisis, when the currency lost roughly two-thirds of its value in under eighteen months.
Paper substrate at this denomination is worth noting: most central banks issuing notes above the equivalent of roughly $40 USD had already migrated to polymer by the mid-2010s. The Dominican Republic retained cotton-linen paper across the series.
