Additional information

Issued to mark the 1200th anniversary of Charlemagne's construction of the palatine chapel at Aachen — completed around 805 AD and considered the finest example of Carolingian architecture north of the Alps — this coin reflects Spain's periodic insistence on framing its medieval heritage within a broader European narrative. The chapel survived largely intact and was later incorporated into Aachen Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978.
