| Reverse description | The royal crown is depicted in the upper central field, with the Madrid mint mark (crowned M) to its left. Below these devices appears the face value of the piece. In the exergue, a lenticular hologram bears the image of a crowned M flanked by two zeros, with the commemorative dates 1975 and 2000 appearing to its left and right respectively. The legend commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the proclamation is arranged above all central devices. The design is bordered by an inner pearl beading. |

This coin marks the 25th anniversary of Juan Carlos I's accession to the throne following the death of Francisco Franco in November 1975 — a transition that was far from guaranteed. Juan Carlos had been groomed by Franco as a loyal successor, and most Spanish republicans and leftists expected him to preserve the dictatorship. Instead, he systematically dismantled it from within, legalizing the Communist Party in 1977 and shepherding the country toward the 1978 constitution. The decision to issue a commemorative at the millennium anniversary reflects the settled, almost retrospective confidence of a democracy that had survived a coup attempt in 1981.
