Obverse description The obverse presents a coin-within-a-coin design, featuring a faithful rendition of Uruguay's historic 1844 coinage struck at the Montevideo mint. At centre, the Uruguayan national coat of arms is depicted within an oval cartouche, quartered with scales of justice, a fortified hill, an ox, and a horse, surmounted by a radiant sun and enclosed by an oak wreath tied at the base. The inner legend reads 'REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' around the wreath, with the date '1844' in the exergue. The broad outer field, rendered with a deeply mirrored proof finish, carries the commemorative legend 'PRIMERA MONEDA DE PLATA ACUNADA EN MONTEVIDEO' along the upper arc and '1984' at the base, flanking the historicised central device.
