Issued to commemorate Taiwan's 2012 presidential election, in which Ma Ying-jeou won a second term against Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party — the first major election in which Tsai led the DPP ticket. Taiwan's quadrennial direct presidential elections, established only in 1996, remain one of the few genuinely competitive democratic contests in the Chinese-speaking world, and the Central Bank has intermittently marked them with bullion issues since the early 2000s.
The one-troy-ounce .9999 fine specification aligns with international bullion standards adopted to attract collector and investor crossover demand.
