Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of Mozambican independence from Portugal, this gold piece appeared the same year the country's civil war between FRELIMO government forces and RENAMO insurgents was consuming the national economy. Banco de Moçambique was producing commemorative gold for export markets while the metical itself was collapsing domestically — the official exchange rate had become functionally fictional by mid-decade.
