Additional information

Issued to mark the turn of the millennium, this is one of the largest and heaviest coins ever produced by the Národná banka Slovenska — a deliberate statement piece from a central bank that had only existed since the 1993 dissolution of Czechoslovakia. At just seven years old as an institution, the NBS was still establishing the visual and material vocabulary of Slovak monetary identity when this was struck.

The denomination itself, 2000 korún, was essentially notional — no Slovak would have spent it, and none circulated.
