Cameroon has issued commemorative silver under its own authority since the 1970s, but the volume and variety of collector-targeted issues expanded sharply after the country began contracting European minting houses — primarily in the Czech Republic and Poland — to produce thematic pieces with no connection to Cameroonian history or culture. This coin is one of those: a frankly commercial product using CFA franc denominations as a legal fiction to reach the bullion and novelty collector market.
Odysseus as a subject has appeared on dozens of similar issues from multiple African monetary authorities in recent years, each mint chasing the same collector demographic. The selective gilding is a production technique common to the Czech Mint's current output.
