Kopi luwak — coffee processed through the digestive tract of the Asian palm civet — became a Western luxury fetish in the early 2000s largely on the back of a single scene in the 2007 film The Bucket List. Cameroon, which produces neither civets nor kopi luwak commercially, is here issuing commemorative bullion against a cultural phenomenon it has no particular connection to.
The West African CFA franc is managed by the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale under a convertibility guarantee historically pegged to the French franc and now the euro — meaning Cameroon's monetary policy is effectively set in Frankfurt. These gilded 62.2g issues are struck for the collector market, not Cameroonian commerce.
