The Hungarian Geological Institute (Magyar Állami Földtani Intézet) was founded in 1869 and spent over a century as one of Central Europe's leading earth science bodies before being dissolved by the Orbán government in 2012, its functions absorbed into the Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary.
