Equatorial Guinea's early independence-era coinage was largely manufactured to order by the Spanish Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre, and this piedfort is a direct artifact of that relationship. The 1980 royal visit by Juan Carlos I — his first to the former Spanish colony since Equatoguinean independence in 1968 — was the diplomatic occasion being commemorated, arriving just five years after Francisco Macías Nguema's brutal dictatorship had ended with his execution by a firing squad composed of his own troops.
Pieforts of this issue were struck in very small numbers for collectors and official gifts, never approaching general circulation.
