Wrocław's millennium commemorated here refers to the city's first documented mention in 1000 AD, when Holy Roman Emperor Otto III traveled to Gniezno and passed through the region — a visit that effectively placed Silesia within the orbit of the nascent Polish state. The city would change hands repeatedly over the following millennium, spending centuries under Habsburg and then Prussian rule as Breslau before returning to Poland after 1945.
The .900 gold standard used here follows the NBP's consistent alloy choice for commemorative gold of this period, keeping fineness below the .999 threshold that became more common in subsequent decades.
