China's lunar gold series has been issued annually since 1981, making the Rooster the 25th entry in an unbroken run. The 2005 issue corresponds to the Year of the Rooster beginning January 9th of that year. Mintage on the 200 Yuan denomination was capped, as with most issues in this series, to maintain collector premiums — the People's Bank has consistently used tight production limits on the lunar golds as a deliberate instrument of secondary market management.
