Additional information

Issued in 1995 to mark fifty years since the end of Japanese colonial rule over the Korean peninsula, this piece comes from a period when the DPRK mint was aggressively producing foreign-currency collector coins — not for domestic circulation, but almost exclusively for hard currency revenue through overseas dealers. The Turtle Ship subject carries particular ideological weight in North Korean numismatics, as Joseon-era Admiral Yi Sun-sin was actively promoted by the Pyongyang government as a nationalist symbol distinct from South Korean historical claims to the same figure.

KM#95.2 distinguishes this from a companion silver issue in the same series.
