FC Shakhter Karagandy, founded in 1958 as the club of the Karaganda coal basin workers, became the first Kazakh club to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage, qualifying in 2012 after defeating Celtic in a playoff that briefly made international headlines. The National Bank of Kazakhstan has issued a series of 200 Tenge sports commemoratives in nickel silver, and this piece belongs to that ongoing program honoring Kazakh football clubs.
