Somalia's elephant bullion series has been issued annually since 2004 and occupies an unusual position in the gold bullion market: it is produced under license by the German firm Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitung (LEV), not by a Somali mint, and marketed primarily to European collectors. The nominal face value is legally assigned but bears no practical relationship to the coin's gold content or market price — a common arrangement for modern bullion issues seeking the legal-tender designation required by some institutional buyers.
The series changes its reverse design annually, which drives collector demand well beyond spot and sustains a secondary market in earlier dates.
