The Paika Bidroha of 1817 is now widely argued to predate the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny as India's first organized armed uprising against British colonial rule. The Paikas were a martial peasant militia from Odisha who served the Gajapati kings; when the East India Company annexed Khurda and stripped their land rights, they rose under Bakshi Jagabandhu. The rebellion was suppressed within months, its historical significance deliberately downplayed in colonial records for generations.
The 2018 bicentenary issue came after sustained lobbying by Odishan historians and politicians to have the uprising formally recognized at the national level — recognition that remains officially incomplete.
