Obverse description Right-facing bare-headed portrait bust of King Carlos I of Portugal, rendered in high relief with finely detailed short curly hair and a neatly trimmed beard. The bust truncation is signed ALVES, identifying the engraver Valério Alves. The arched legend CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL runs along the upper periphery, and the date is displayed prominently in the lower field, flanked by small stars. The entire design is contained within a continuous beaded border.
