This issue spans one of the most turbulent transitions in Brazilian history — the abolition of the monarchy and the proclamation of the Republic in November 1889, which occurred while the first coins of this series were already entering circulation. The Casa da Moeda had to adapt its production almost immediately to reflect the new republican government, making the earliest dates of this series transitional pieces in the most literal sense.
The copper-nickel alloy was a deliberate modernization, replacing the older bronze coinage as Brazil sought to align its currency infrastructure with industrialized nations.
