Additional information

The Gothic Crown series revives William Wyon's 1847 design, which was itself never intended for circulation — the original was a pattern piece struck to showcase engraving quality, and fewer than 8,000 reached the public through a limited sale. Wyon died the following year, making the crowned portrait one of his last major works.

The 2021 two-ounce iteration sits at the top of a tiered release structure the Royal Mint used to reintroduce the design across multiple denominations and metals. Spink reference GE34 confirms the quartered arms reverse rather than the plain cross variant issued concurrently.
