This coin commemorates the 300th anniversary of the Hanoverian succession, marking the moment in 1714 when the British crown passed to George I — an elector of Hanover who spoke little English and never much bothered to learn it. The constitutional machinery that transferred power to him, bypassing over fifty Catholic claimants closer in blood, was the Act of Settlement of 1701, one of the most deliberately engineered successions in British history.
George II, who followed in 1727, was the last British monarch to command troops personally in battle, at Dettingen in 1743.
