The Britannia series has carried a fineness guarantee since 1987, but the shift to .9999 fine gold didn't come until 2013 — a refinement that brought British bullion coinage in line with Canadian Maples and Australian Kangaroos at the premium end of the global market. The 2025 proof issue is among the first Britannia pieces to bear the effigy of Charles III in this format, making it a transitional document of the reign rather than simply a continuation of an annual program.
The two-ounce proof denomination has historically seen the lowest mintage figures within the Britannia proof range.
