Grünberg in Hessen was a small Hessian market town with a population barely exceeding three thousand when it issued this Notgeld during the inflationary spiral of 1922. The denomination itself — 200 Pfennig, an awkward two-Mark equivalent — reflects the transitional moment when the old Pfennig denominations were still in official use but rapidly becoming meaningless against accelerating price rises. Within months, municipal notes of this kind would be superseded by denominations in the millions.
Scharfes Druckereien in Wetzlar handled small-run municipal emergency currency across the central Hessian region during this period, which accounts for the consistent production quality seen across several towns' issues from the same press run.
