The 200 Pesos denomination was struck specifically to commemorate the 1986 FIFA World Cup held in Mexico — itself a replacement tournament after Colombia withdrew as host in 1983 citing financial inability to complete stadium infrastructure. Mexico accepted the hosting rights on short notice, the second time the country had hosted the tournament, having previously done so in 1970.
Casa de Moneda de México issued several denominations in this World Cup series at varying weights. The two-troy-ounce format placed this piece firmly in bullion territory rather than the collector medallion market, though the two functions overlapped considerably in Mexican silver issues of the mid-1980s, a period when peso devaluation had severely eroded confidence in paper currency.
