The 39th International Eucharistic Congress was held in Bogotá in August 1968 — the same week Pope Paul VI arrived in Colombia, becoming the first reigning pontiff to set foot in Latin America. The visit was politically charged: Colombia was deep in post-Violencia reconstruction, and the Church's presence carried weight far beyond liturgy. This coin was issued to commemorate that congress, and Paul VI's trip remains one of the most consequential papal journeys of the 20th century by any measure of hemispheric Catholic politics.
