The Banco Nacional del Paraguay was established in 1871, but the institution's early decades were defined by the catastrophic demographic and economic aftermath of the War of the Triple Alliance, which had ended just two years prior and left Paraguay with a fraction of its pre-war male population. Banknote-issuing capacity was essentially rebuilt from nothing. By 1886 the bank was placing orders with the American Bank Note Company — the dominant South American contract printer of the period — producing a series that had to function in an economy still rebuilding basic monetary confidence.
The 200 Pesos Fuertes denomination is the highest in the S150-series, making surviving examples uncommon relative to lower values.
