Banco de México gained formal operational autonomy on 1 April 1994 — the same year NAFTA took effect and, as it happened, the same year the Zapatista uprising and the December peso crisis would test that independence almost immediately. The 1994–95 crisis was severe enough that some questioned whether a newly autonomous central bank could hold under political pressure. It did. This commemorative issue marks thirty years from that date.

Durasafe is a hybrid substrate — a polymer core laminated between two thin layers of paper — which gives it different tactile and security properties than straight polymer. Less common than either pure paper or pure polymer, and notably harder to counterfeit than traditional cotton-fibre notes.
