El Banco Nacional was one of several private banks operating under Mexico's 1882 banking concession, and its notes circulated primarily in Mexico City and the surrounding Federal District. The 200 Peso denomination was the largest in the series — a face value that put it firmly out of reach for ordinary commerce and into the hands of merchants, landowners, and institutional settlement.
ABNC's 1880s Mexican output is well-regarded among printers of the period for tight intaglio work, and the PS702 series is no exception. Paper quality on surviving examples varies; notes that passed through commercial use show characteristic fold stress at the central horizontal crease, a known weakness in this format.
