The Mozambican metical was introduced in 1980, replacing the escudo following independence and the end of Portuguese colonial administration. A redenomination in 2006 replaced the original metical at 1,000 to one, making the 35th anniversary being commemorated here technically that of the first metical rather than the current currency — a distinction the issuing authority chose not to dwell on.
