| Obverse description | Intaglio portrait of Samora Moisés Machel, first President of Mozambique, within an oval vignette at centre-left, set against intricate teal guilloche underprint. The bank's circular seal appears to the right of the portrait, with the denomination in large letterpress numerals at lower right and the serial number printed twice in contrasting colours. A caption below the portrait identifies the subject in full. |

The 200 Meticais denomination was introduced as part of Mozambique's second-generation metical series, which followed the 2006 redenomination that replaced the old metical at a rate of 1,000 to 1 — a correction made necessary by decades of post-independence inflation and the economic damage of the civil war that ended only in 1992. By 2011, the economy had stabilized enough that a note at this value level made practical sense without inviting immediate ridicule.
Printed on cotton substrate with a relatively modest security package for a note of this face value — watermark, thread, microprint — it sits below the threshold at which Banco de Moçambique invested in more sophisticated features like color-shifting ink or holograms, which were reserved for the 500 and 1000 Meticais.
