The 200 Maloti denomination was introduced as part of Lesotho's commemorative series marking fifty years of independence from Britain, declared in 1966. De La Rue's involvement is long-standing with the Central Bank of Lesotho — the relationship dates to the maloti's introduction in 1980 when Lesotho decoupled its currency from the South African rand, though the peg to the rand at 1:1 has been maintained ever since.
Security provision on P#25 is notably light for a high-denomination note of this period — thread and watermark only, without the optically variable ink or color-shifting elements that had become near-standard on comparable African issues by 2015.
